here's my gripe…

>i’m slightly embarrassed to admit that, despite being tired, i ended up not going to bed that night. instead, i stayed up reading things online and tentatively planning on going out in the morning to take some photos. i decided to check out the weather forecast to see if i would have a shot at capturing some photos of the sunrise. i’ve gone out twice previously trying to get a sunrise somewhere other than my front porch, but had yet to be successful.

once i’d decided that i was definitely going to go out, the only thing left to decide was where i was going to go. my first thought was to go to the metro park where i took all those foggy forest pictures, but when i thought about it, i didn’t think i’d get much of a sunrise as there are so many trees and the land is pretty low there. so that pretty much left my other favourite photography place: the abandoned railroad. i really can’t get enough of that area. and you’ll be proud to know, sean, that i used my tripod while there!

after taking a whole bunch of photos there, i was off to find some red photos somewhere for pdx. there is a red barn near my parents’ house that i tried to get the other night, but it was just too dark for the red to show up. of course, once i got there, i was too nervous to take the photo because on the other side of me are residential houses and i was worried that someone might come out and say something to me about parking in front of their house. i must have driven by the area about three times. on one of the circuits, i passes by a field with some kind of old, very rusty farm equipment just sitting there. i’ve passed it many times, actually and have always thought that it would make a great photo.

you may have noticed that i keep talking about photos, but you haven’t seen any yet. at the end of this blog there is a little link thingy that will whisk you away to another page to see a slide show of some of the photos i took yesterday. there are around 30, i think, which seems like a lot to put into a blog. they’re also on flickr, if you want to go look at them there.

where was i? oh, yes, that rusty farm thing. i took a few photos of it and then headed back towards my house to go to a nearby cemetary. my great great grandfather was in the army during the civil war. i think he was rather young and was only a drummer boy or something, but it still garnered him a marker when they put a civil war memorial in the cemetary. and something that had been talked about a couple of weeks ago on my friend john’s blog made me think of it and decide i needed to go take photos of the memorial.

when i got there i had a little disappointment. while the memorial is still there, the marker for my great great grandfather no longer is. in fact, there were only three left. the cemetary is, unfortunately, a big hangout for teenagers to sit around and drink and then destroy headstones. for all i know, it’s been missing for years and i just forgot, but it was still sad. but, i did get a few nice photos, i think. i may go back when spring has taken more of a hold and there are leaves on the trees.

after all the photographic goodness, i went home and after a quick breakfast, took a nice nap. when i awoke, we sat outside and let the kids play on the porch and in the yard. then when they had their fill, we took a drive where i managed to snap off a few more pictures just for fun.

the thing was, the driving around started to get old after a little while. we were supposed to be meeting up with my parents and sister at some point for dinner. it kept getting closer and closer to the tentative time we were to meet and we didn’t know where we were meeting them yet. i decided i better call and find out what was happening. and as is typical, dad was being difficult. he didn’t want this and he didn’t want that. he wasn’t hungry. he was pouting about something. *sigh* we purposefully didn’t drive out very far because we worried that we’d be an hour or more away when my parents would call saying, “we’re hungry, meet us here in a few minutes!”

we eventually just showed up at their house to wait until dad decided where he wanted to go. sat around trying to pretend we couldn’t hear mom and dad arguing about the time on the vcr. dad was still saying he didn’t want to go wherever mom would suggest. finally g said he wanted to go to don pablo’s. if you knew how many times g has said he didn’t want to go there, you’d find that as funny as hubby and i did. but we all jumped behind it in hopes that dad would, too because he usually likes going there. and yay! he agreed!

other than the slight annoyance of my sister insisting that the don pablo’s in minnesota makes less salty tortilla soup than our apparently over-salty ohio don pablo’s, things went ok. at least i think it did. it seems to me there was something else that annoyed me, but i can’t remember what it is now. sorry.

well, there it is. not sure this was worth the wait. heh. here’s the link to the slideshow.View slideshow
