and by that i mean my ability to make a decent pot of coffee, of course. if we’re talking about my mind, well, i think i lost that ages ago. geez, people, try to keep up!
i’ve always thought that i made a decent pot of coffee. i started making it about 10 or 12 years ago. my parents never made coffee when i was growing up because neither of them like it. i didn’t have my first cup until i was 20 or 21. it was out of one of those coffee vending machines they had at college and obviously it was terrible, but i was undterred. when a little coffee bar was opened up in the basement between buildings, i was one of the first customers. i found out what good coffee tasted like, well, good coffee with creamer and flavoured syrup, anyway. 🙂 and i’ve been a fan of the stuff every since, in case you hadn’t guessed. 😉
so, getting back to the point, i’ve been making brewed coffee for around 10 years. i’ve always used the ‘one rounded scoop per cup’ method and that’s always served me well, even though hubby thinks i make coffee a bit too strong. but a couple of weeks ago, something happened.
i was spooning in the coffee into the filter and my youngest son sort of distracted me. i apperently lost count of how many spoons of coffee i was putting in and i put way too much. it looked like a lot, but i thought i’d counted it ok so went ahead and closed it up and pressed brew. oh my god was it strong! it was so strong that even i couldn’t drink it, and i like strong coffee. as much as it pained me, i dumped it out.
then, this morning, i was making a fresh pot before hubby left for work. i was using the same kind of coffee this time (seattle’s best henry’s blend) and was trying to be very careful that i didn’t put too much in. filled it with water and then went about my business to help hubby and g get ready for work and school.
when i came back and made up a to-go cup for hubby, i decided to taste it to make sure that i’d used enough sugar and creamer for him. *sip* blech! it tasted like hot water! i had hubby taste it before he left, and he confirmed that it tasted a bit weak, but he was fine with it and took it with him. i was not as complacent, however.
my first thought was to try to run the coffee over the grounds again to see if that would do anything. i found another caraff, poured the coffee in it, opened the filter area and poured the coffee over it slowly while holding the first caraff underneath. not an easy task. it didn’t really do anything, though. 😦
then i thought, well, why not try putting a fresh scoop of ground coffee into a filter and then tie it up like a tea bag? it worked in my cup, so i think it worked when i put it in the pot of coffee. haven’t tried it yet to see.
but the whole thing has me worried. have i lost my ability to make a decent pot of coffee? it’s a real concern. a day without a cup of coffee is no day i want to experience.
